The collection includes the correspondence, 1863-1895, of Marshall McDonald (1835-1895) of Berryville, Va., a faculty member of the Virginia Miliary Institute at Lexington, commissioner of fisheries of Virginia, and United States Commissioner of Fish and Fisheries in Washington, D.C. Also includes family and personal correspondence, 1857- 1925, of his wife, Mary Eliza (McCormick) McDonald (1840-1934) of Berryville, Lexington, and "Frankford," Clarke County, Va., especially with her sisters, and a commonplace book, 1860-1863, kept by her in Clarke County, Va.; correspondence, 1877-1951, of author and playwright Rose Mortimer Ellzey (MacDonald) Skoggs (1871-1953) of Berryville, Va., and Washington, D.C., as well as essays and other historical writings and miscellaneous papers; and scattered materials of other members of the McDonald family.

On March 29, 1839 the General Aslsembly passed the final version of the act establishing a military school at the Lexington arsenal, where the students would protect the arms while pursuing educational courses. The School was named the Virginia Military Institute and is the nation's oldest state supported military college.
